Re: 30-06 Elk Rifle Final Chapter (we hope!)

While I never experienced an unintentional discharge with the stock Remington trigger, on the other hand I was never able to dial in a satisfactory trigger pull while maintaining reliable functioning. After reading Jack Belk's book about all the things that can go wrong with the Walker trigger i opt...

Re: S & W N-frame Project

Testing the bevel base bore riders .... https://imgur.com/dNEMZch.jpg.jpg The 180 gr. teased me by shooting my first sub 2 inch group, but after that it went crazy, with too much velocity variation and too many vertical fliers. I'm not sure what caused it to fail but this design was definitely a ste...

Re: S & W N-frame Project

SHOOTOUT between a smooth bullet and a grooved bullet. I went into this shootout very prejudiced because I had previously experimented with smooth coated bullets in a rifle and the smooth bullets would not even stay on the target. In general, grooves were very important in rifle bullets especially a...

30-06 Elk Rifle Final Chapter (we hope!)

I started this project in 2005, then got very busy so the project gathered dust for 13 years.   This M700 started out as a lightweight elk rifle. Then for several years it was used to test hi-velocity cast bullets. The factory 10" twist barrel with its sloppy SAAMI chamber neck ...

Re: S & W N-frame Project

Since the 180 gr. bore riding GC shot decent even though it was a "bastard" design, I want to try some more bore riding designs, so here's a couple of new bullets to play with, er, I mean test. The new bullets have a crimp groove in the right place even though I'm not planning to crimp the...

Re: 300MP vs WW296 vs WC297 vs H110

Another comparison of WW296 to WC297, however with different cases so it was not 100% apples to apples: -- 20.6 gr. WW296, coated 140 gr. GC, CCI 550, RP nickel cases, 1806 fps predicted by QL, 1682 fps actual, 56 ES, huge fireball! -- 20.6 gr. WC297, coated 140 gr. GC, CCI 550, WW nickel ...

Re: S & W N-frame Project

As if I did not have enough things to worry about, there's this. :? The end of the barrel is square and true, and the other two barrels yield similar results, so the barrel is not to blame. The problem is that there is angular misalignment between the cylinder and the barrel. UPDATE: I measured the ...

Re: S & W N-frame Project

CRIMP SHOOTOUT using the 180 gr. BB control load. Neck tension can influence the case's grip on the bullet even more than crimp. Many expander spuds are too big for my taste and end up getting modified so that they barely touch a sized case. https://imgur.com/30CRYbM.jpg A homemade die was used for ...

Re: S & W N-frame Project

Testing the 185 gr. Keith bevel base. 100 yards, "True Mini" cone. Accuracy was poor, averaging 7.33". The Keith did not seem to like the "True Mini" cone. Previously, the Keith had shot 4.40" in the "intermediate Taylor" and 4.90" in the "Fals...

Re: S & W N-frame Project

Testing the "bastard" bore riding 180 gr. GC bullet. I forgot to number the sequence of these targets but I started at the top left and worked down to the bottom right. The first two targets were decent, but targets #3 and #4 were shotgun patterns. What the heck? I examined the gun closely...
