Deck decides to become a screened porch

Postby mtngun » Sat Aug 31, 2013 3:09 pm

The deck didn't work out as planned because the wind always blows snow and rain into the deck area.

So the deck is getting converted to a screened porch. The screen and the siding are to keep the snow out, not to keep insects out.

There's still quite a bit left to do.

South and East sides of the porch are finished, except for splashing some stain on in one spot. The weather has been too stormy to work on a ladder so that stain will just have to wait. :D

I just barely started on the North side of the porch today. I'm going to tear out the existing stairs to the porch and totally redo the stairs. The new stairs will be under a roof and screened in so I won't have to shovel the snow off the stairs several times a day in the winter. :D

This is where the new stairway will be. As you can see, the framing will have to be totally redone, so it's a fairly big job (for one man working in his spare time). Plus I am out of lumber and will have to mill more boards before I can go much further.

Old stairs ripped out, new stairs started. Unlike the old stairs, then new stairs will be under a roof and screened in to keep snow off the stairs.

A little more progress on the new stairs, despite 30 - 40 mph winds and rain, sleet, and snow. Still several days of work left.

West side. I haven't decided what to do with the gap between the landing and the house. I'd rather leave it open but I'll wait and see how much snow drifts into that gap.

North side. It's lacking a few pieces of trim, and I need to make a screen door for that opening. The screen door will be used as a way to move bulky items into the house without having to make a 180 degree turn on the landing.

A little more progress ..... screen door, for transporting bulky items up the stairs without making a 180 degree turn.

I'm still working on handrails for the stairs, and there's still some sliding screen windows to make and install on the deck.

Unfortunately, I used up all the screen, so I may need to order more -- and I'm not sure if this particular screen is available in small quantities. So some of the remaining bits may be put off for a while. ;)

At last we have handrails for the stairs, at least on one side.

Eventually I plan to add handrails to both sides, but I think I'll wait until the weather is a little warmer.
