quickload question?

Postby 500bfrman » Tue Jul 15, 2008 5:01 pm

Probably stupid question. But I figured I would ask. I'm looking into buying quickload. I'm assuming I will be able to input cast bullet variables into this. I can put in my own creations of bullets. Right?

Yes. The variables are weight, seating depth, and engraving pressure. Seating depth is a huge issue for revolver cartridges and playing with quickload will show you this.

Engraving pressure? does that correlate to bearing surface or no? I ordered two molds from you friday evening 700 grainer PB for 500 s/w and a wimpy 350 grainer for 44 mag. would you be able/willing to give me some quickload info for the 700 grainer.
1.343 length .700 nose length .643 in the case. powder would be h110.
I was posting with someone else or another forum and they said they were having trouble with a 700 grainer keyholing, but when I heard his load that he thought was max, it sounded light to me. And from other posts I've read on here under revolvers and 700 grainers it was light. I do know that a lot depends on seating depth and his 700 grainer may be designed quite a bit different than mine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I think QL calls it "start pressure." Just a fudge factor that is added, and it is all a guess (your guess). Cast bullets have very little engraving pressure regardless of design.

Sorry, my bootleg QL died and I never replaced it, so I cannot do the calcs for you. I had some QL data posted at one time but it may have been lost in the server move. At one time, John Ross had some 700 grain pressure tested data on his site. http://www.john-ross.net/

Thanks for the info. I am able to get some data from some of the posts regarding 510 grain and long noses. I did some calculations regarding available space and what quickload says off of those, and it seems there is quite enough space available in my design anyway.

Best I recall, H110 does not use up all the powder space with a 700 grain bullet (H110 is a little fast for the 700 grain bullet). That does not mean that seating depth does not matter, because it still affects pressure.
