.510 bullet design

Postby bigbore510 » Tue Dec 17, 2013 11:47 am

Do you keep records of my previous mold designs that were received ? I would like to duplicate the .500 S&W 525 grain mold but want it in .512 now. Also, cant I use the Hornady gas checks? I cant seem to find gators?

The gas check situation is very confusing, Hornady does not make a 50 caliber check, only a 500 check. Unfortunately Hornady calls their 500 check a "50." The OD of the Hornady check is only about 0.505" (from memory). That's not nearly big enough to crimp on in a 50 caliber sizing die.

The contact info for Gator checks is:

Bullet Swaging Supply (home of Larry Blackmon's Gator Checks)
303 McMillan Road
West Monroe, LA 71291
(318) 387-7257
Fax (318) 325-7034

As for records, if you ordered a mold online and if you can message me your name and the approximate month and year that you ordered it, I can prolly seach my PayPal account for the original order specs. If you ordered by mail, then I have no searchable paper records.

I keep saying that customers will someday be able to "save" their designs in an online database, but I never seem to have time to write the code.

No PM received.

You can post the info here if you like, I was just trying to avoid displaying your personal info online.

I guess I am not explaining things right. I sent you a PM so you can look up my info and make another mold for me the same as the last one, but in .512 diameter ? I left my e mail and or pay pal account info but did not get an e mail or pm from you?

OK, now I have not one but 3 PM's from you. I dunno why they waited so long to show up. My email is either on the "Contact" page or just click on my forum name and a page should open that gives you an option to email me.

Here's your original order specs. It only took 5 seconds to find once I had a name to search for 8-) :

XL alum 2 cav stud_locknut, BTAN 525 gr WW, 0.501, 0.501 x 0.100 fb
Item# 0.600 nL, 85% meplat, 055_crimp, 0.493 x 0.493 x 0.080 br , .14 x 0.46 stepped Hornady 50, 1.0 GtoB, 45 groove: , 2 bands 0.0832 long, 1.03 OAL, 0.1849 ci:

Here is how it might looked scaled up to 50 caliber using the Gator 50 short check (there are two styles of Gator 50 checks so you'll need to decide which one you want to use). This is with the weight held to 525 grains, so it is shorter than your 500 caliber bullet. Alternatively, you may prefer to increase the weight to 550 grains to maintain your original 1.03" OAL.
