12 gauge from hell

Postby mtngun » Thu Feb 21, 2008 8:04 pm

from the old forum:

Getting the oomph behind slugs--

Just started testing my 12GA FH (From Hell). It is built on a Savage 210 Action, with a 30 inch heavy barrel. We got Dixie Bullets 12ga Terminator 730gr slug up to 2700 fps, 11800 ft lbs energy.. There was no leading, and I want to thank the boss here for making the molds for Dixie. They are great lead slugs.

Twist is 1 to 20..Rob on AR also has same barrel, a Borchardt Falling block action. He can run full 60k pressures with that. We got barrels from Pacnor.

Okay, you've got to elaborate on your load a little here. I don't want powder quantities or anything like that as I will talk myself into loading some rounds for my NEF without much hesitation. I am quite curious as to the the type of shell you are using, powder type, over powder wads, crimping priming etc.

This is a project that I had been thinking about for a while as well since I can only chase deer in Ohio with a rifled shotgun. Glad to see that I am not the only person interested in obscene velocities for 12 ga rifles.

The 12GA Fh is 12ga chamber in heavy barrel, heavy strong action, that takes brass case 3.85 inches long. Chamber still will fire regular 3in shotshells. Cases are made from bmg brass that we put a 12ga size rim on.rim machined and case machine wit rimm threaded on, no heat
or soldering to weaken brass..Brass can be shortened for shorter chambers.I just use full loads of slower powder, with 90% plus fill.No wads or cards, example load is 280 gr of H-335 ball powder under a 3/4oz Barhes 12ga sabot. Now you can use shotgun powders and wads, like the heaviest that is used in plastic cases and work up for my Savage. Brass is super,as I have case loaded over 25 times and never had to resize bottom 2/3 of the case.
